Bastille Day Celebration
July 15, 2007

Bastille Day is France's celebration of the storming of the Bastille on July 14th, 1789, but this year in NY, we celebrated on the 15th (a Sunday). Over in Cobble Hill, a neighborhood not far from mine, there was petanque set up in the street, food, wine and beer, and lots of revelers. It was an incredibly hot day to be outside, but it didn't prevent people from celebrating! Viva la France!

Happy Bastille Day!

Petanque is a game played on sand courts, which were set up along two blocks of Court Street in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn.

I have no idea how this game works.

It looks a little like bocce ball.

A French celebration must have a guillotine!

Merguez (spicy lamb sausage) smoking on the grill smelled divine, but the line was too long on this scorching day.

And of course, there was a little band playing festive French music.
