Red Hook Soccer Fields
August 13, 2006

Every Saturday and Sunday, all summer long, families from the Honduras, Dominican Republic, Guatamala, Ecuador, Columbia and other South American cultures set up grills, tables and tents out at the soccer fields in Red Hook, Brooklyn. I'd read about this online and decided to make the 2 mile trek to check it out for myself.

Pupusas are a Salvadorean treat - masa dough filled with meats and cheeses. Sort of like a flat tamale without the leaves.

Yummy pupusas on the griddle.

This man grills marinated beef, served with rice,
beans, fried plantains and fried yucca.

Over at this stand, the smell of grilled chicken, beef and pork draws quite a crowd.

They also make handmade tortillas, cooked on the grill.

The tortillas are stuffed with meat and other toppings to make huaraches, which are like giant burrito-sized tacos, filled with a layer of black beans, meat, lettuce, tomatoes, guac and cheese!

Yum! Makes my mouth water just looking at it!

Grilled corn, to be slathered with a special blend of mayo, cheese and lime.

An assortment of aguas frescas.

Sweet horchata - rice milk with sugar and cinnamon.

This fruit stand also serves mango sprinkled with a little salt and chili pepper. I didn't try it, but it sounds very interesting.

Fried yucca and plantains.

Ceviche and Chilean empanadas.

Skewers of meat sizzling on the grill.

On my way home, I passed by this park with an ironic name. It's named for the streets at this intersection, but it made me chuckle.

Under the BQE is this humorously dressed stop walk.
If you care to read more about this, the NY Times did a great story about it recently.
