A hot summer day at the beach
Long Beach, Long Island
July 3, 2006

Monday was a scorcher, so we escaped to Long Beach, on Long Island.

The boardwalk is just a short 5 block walk from the LIRR train station.

It seems to go on for miles in both directions.

A real beach, just an hour away from home!

Volleyball nets run the length of the beach.

A beach pass costs $7.

Lifeguards sit high atop mounds of sand.

Miles of volleyball and beach!

Under the boardwalk, one can find refuge from the sun.

Seagulls enjoy the cool breeze and icy water.

Matthew dips his toes in the ocean.

New Yorkers and Long Islanders share the cool waters.

Sand castle.

Upon closer look, we discover a seagull feather and
crab legs were used to decorate this castle!

Lifeguard making sure swimmers stay away from rocks.

Beach patrol station.

Happiness is a cool beach.

Cool yellow and orange building.

There's a very wide bike lane down the length of the boardwalk.

The rules of Long Beach.

Boogie boarding.

The crowd thins after 5pm.

Beach soccer.

Sailing.

A much less elaborate sand castle.

A few seashells at waters edge.

Seagull watching the surf.

Me

and my shadow.

Hmm, what's Matthew reading???

John Grisham! Great trashy beach reading!

Treasure hunter scours the beach for prizes.

Hey, Mr. Treasure Hunter, I found gold!

Cartwheels on the sand.

Hungry seagull attempts to take a bite out of the rope.

On our way to catch the train, a Cadillac limo, with a ticket!

Back to the train station, time to head back to Brooklyn.
