Lower Manhattan

Building of the Brooklyn bridge began in 1867; after many compliations, it opened in 1883. It was one of the first steel suspension bridges, and at 6,016 feet long, was one of the world's longest in its time.

The twin Gothic-arch towers rise 272 feet from the river. The bridge is high enough to allow the tallest ships to pass beneath, and is supported by steel cables that hang from the towers.
