Non-Hollywood Casablanca

December 11, 2009

Casablanca was our first stop in Morocco. Because of a certain movie from 1942, starring a very handsome Humphrey Bogart and a gorgeous Ingrid Bergman, we all have a very romantic idea of Casablanca. In reality, this is Morocco’s business center, and aside from a bar called “Rick’s Cafe,” little effort is devoted to driving tourism, so the city is quite worn down. We only had a couple of hours before the sun went down, so we took a short walk around the market (most of which was closed when we arrived), then went in search of dinner. Our first two choices were closed, so we settled for roasted chicken at Rotisserie Centrale.

Winner winner chicken dinner! The rotisserie chicken was really tender and moist, served with a lemony olive sauce, rice and fries. Tasty!

The next morning, our driver, Hicham, picked us up and took us to see the Hassan II Mosque, the tallest building in Morocco, and the third largest mosque in the world. It’s located right on the coast, on the North Atlantic Ocean. More than 6,000 artisans were commissioned to work on the various carvings and designs of the stunning building, which was completed in 1993.

Madrid, Land of Tapas

Little dishes, big tastes, best enjoyed with wine, what’s not to love? When Nicole and I decided the best way for us to get to Morocco was through Madrid, I couldn’t wait! First we made a little stop at La Casa del Abuelo, named for the sweet wine from Alicante and known for their shrimp. Then we went for more variety at Casa Alhambra, which serves larger plates. Now that I’ve gotten a little taste, I might need a real trip to Spain next year!

Our feast also included fried calamari rings. We definitely over-ordered, but it was fun to have a variety. Can’t wait to go back!
