Big Bird Eggs

May 29, 2008

I love eggs. Over-easy, scrambled, hard-boiled, poached, baked, they’re great with veggies, salty meats, cheese - they really are a perfect food. So you can imagine how tempted I was to buy a giant ostrich egg today. These things are about 6-7″ tall and maybe 5″ wide in the middle, with a sturdy, shiny shell. I’d love to make a giant omlet, or maybe a deviled egg, or maybe a really big quiche. I could also make a huge souffle, or a couple dozen egg salad sandwiches. What would you make?

The egg cartons on the right would probably fit medium chicken eggs, so you get an idea of how big the ostrich egg is.

Unfortunately, one of these would bust my food budget.

Most. Awesomest. Ever.

I’ll admit, I have a few TV shows I can really geek out on, and “So You Think You Can Dance” is one of them.  Last week was the first auditions of Season 4, and the last guy they showed was the most amazing pop ‘n locker I’ve ever seen. Even the judges, including Mia Michaels, one of the most amazing choreographers ever, was impressed. The look on her face was absolutely priceless. Check it out and see for yourself how truly talented this kid is.

Your vs. You’re

May 13, 2008

I can’t stand the incorrect use of “your” and “you’re” so I stopped in my tracks when I caught sight of this sign in front an East Village bar. Not only did they misuse “your,” they did it twice! Argh!

A Bus Stop Worth Waiting In

May 12, 2008

Yesterday morning, I noticed a fun variety of seating options at this bus stop. Hopefully people will leave the chairs alone, as I think it adds a lot of character to this corner of Brooklyn! The 3rd chair from the left is my favorite - reminds me of a chair in my grandma’s kitchen.

Revlon 5K Run/Walk for Women’s Cancer

May 9, 2008

On a cold grey, misty Saturday morning, I joined thousands of New Yorkers in support of women’s cancer research, sponsored by Revlon. This is one of two charity runs I participate in every year, always in honor of my grandma, who is a breast cancer survivor. Lots of people run or walk in groups, and one of the more creatively named groups I saw was called “Save Second Base.” Luckily it didn’t rain, and I was able to finish in my normal time. Next up, the Koman Race for the Cure!

Revlon
I arrived at the starting point so early, there were only a couple hundred people there!

Revlon
This group was identified by their fuzzy blue hats.

Revlon
Even the canines came out to support the cause!

Revlon
Cute pink Cadillac, but I didn’t really want to run behind a car leaving a trail of carbon monoxide.

Revlon
The front of the starting line - most of these people walking, not running the 5K, so you can imagine the chaos in the first mile.

Elvis came to drive the pink Cadillac!

Revlon
I’m ready to go!

Revlon
I made it! (yes, I took my camera out of my pocket as I ran towards the finish line)

Revlon
These people stopped for a hot dog somewhere around mile 2. Seriously. I saw other walkers munching on dirty water dogs as they walked the race route.

Revlon
This was the crowd of walkers somewhere near the halfway mark, an hour after the race started. How exciting to see so many people participating in this great cause!
