In lieu of joining the masses in the city to watch the Easter Parade, we opted for a less traditional Easter adventure. We decided to go for dim sum! After more than 3 years here, we finally made the trek down to Brooklyn’s Chinatown, in the neighborhood known as Sunset Park. It’s a short subway ride (2 stops) or a long walk (about 60 blocks) away. We had lots of yummy eats at 8th Avenue Seafood Restaurant, then roamed the various produce and fish markets, bakeries and sundry shops. As Matthew observed, Chinatowns from one city to the next all seem to have the same characteristics, from the shops to the goods (and goodies!) to the restaurant decor.

Happy Easter!

Hot tea, pan fried shrimp and veggie dumplings, cha siu bao (steamed BBQ pork buns) and shrimp rolled in rice noodles.

This was a new one - a fried veggie egg roll wrapped in rice noodle, drizzled with a sweet soy sauce. Tasty, if not so healthy, this was Matthew’s favorite dish of the day.

After dim sum, we decided to be adventurous and try this mango drink with basil seeds. It had the strangest texture, but really wasn’t bad (click on the photo to see a larger pic).

This shop sold giant bags of dried black mushrooms and other preserved and dried goods commonly used in Chinese cooking.

We stumbled on this guy selling homemade, fresh tofu streetside, like those I frequent in Manhattan’s Chinatown.

We bought some to eat for dinner tonight!

We DID NOT buy the live frogs we saw at one of the fish markets.

Brooklyn Chinatown is home to this future rock star!
Whether you went Easter egg hunting, shared brunch with family and friends, or had a non-traditional adventure, I hope you had a very Happy Easter!
